okc climate rally speaker
Gant Roberson, OU College Democrats Departmental Secretary, gives rousing words to the Climate Rally, his first major public speaking engagement.

September is Climate ACTION Month. In Oklahoma City there was a phenomenal Youth Climate Rally & March on Friday, September 20th. The crowd of some 400 to 500 people were inspired by the six high school and college-aged speakers expressing their concern for the future of planet Earth. The event was covered by three TV news stations, radio reporters and the Daily Oklahoman. The next morning’s Oklahoman had a front-page headline “above the fold” with story and photos continued inside. The Peace House was a major sponsor, with our volunteers bringing tables, chairs and a public address system from Mosaic UMC and Church of the Open Arms. Unitarian Church Minister Rev. Diana Davies led the crowd in a rousing song. The one-mile March through downtown Oklahoma City passed by four oil and gas headquarters, all treated to the 400 marchers chanting, “Leave it in the Ground” and “Love Your Mother Earth.” Alarmed Security Guards came out of Continental Oil Company as throng passed by, apparently fearful of what the totally nonviolent crowd might do.

Cosponsors of the OKC Rally & March included Climate Reality Project Central OK Chapter, Sunrise Movement OKC, Oklahoma Interfaith Power and Light, The Peace House, Earth Rebirth, The Human Community Network, Sierra Club Oklahoma, Humans for Environmental Activism Association, and First Unitarian Church of OKC

Three young women display the amazing creativity of Climate activists in more than 1000 U.S. demonstrations and thousands more around the world.

Around the USA, there were more than 1000 rallies, demonstrations and marches highlighting the Global Youth Climate Strike. There were thousands more in countries around the world. In Melbourne, Australia, some 400,000 people demonstrated. A VOX News link shows photos from Climate Actions in 25 nations. WE ARE INFLUENCING THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD TO TAKE ACTION.

THERE’S MORE THAT WE CAN DO: Each of us can take action to move the momentum of this movement forward so that it becomes a bigger and bigger issue in the U.S. 2020 Elections. Consider letters to newspapers; letters to friends and family in other states; conversations in churches; actions with local and national organizations you support. WE ARE ONE family of humanity, and we demand protection for our Mother Earth.

The 2019 Peace Festival is Saturday Nov. 9th, 10am to 4pm, upstairs in the Civic Center’s “Hall of Mirrors.” All our favorite “issue groups” will offer LOTS of exotic things at their tables to sell for Christmas, Channukah, Solstice, Eid, and all mid-winter Family Celebrations. Live music all day. The Children’s Activity Area will be adult supervised. See the AD in the insert in this letter.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America: Peace House colleague Anne Murray is active in the OKC Chapter of this national advocacy organization of some six million members and supporters. Anne says “Moms” is the largest grassroots gun sense group in the country, with chapters in all 50 states dedicated to protecting people from needless gun accidents and incidents (there have been 253 mass shootings in America just this year). “Moms” is a part of the umbrella organization Everytown, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and Students Demand Action. “Moms” offers speakers who present the “Be SMART” safety program for gun owners to make families safe. The OKC Chapter meets monthly at the First Unitarian Church where Anne is Chair of the Social Justice Committee. For information about joining or supporting Moms Demand Action, contact Anne Murray at 405-596-2314.

Billboards for Peace With Iran: Our “Americans Against the Next War” group that meets every Friday is supporting a national campaign to fund billboards in all 50 states with the message: “Prevent War on Iran.” The design came from our local AANW group’s billboard campaign a few years ago. You will recognize the design. Many of you have returned checks to the Peace House to support this campaign. If you would like to contribute ANY amount to this project, make out a check to IA-100. the tax-deductible nonprofit organization Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans. Write “Billboards” in the memo line, and return the check to The Peace House in our enclosed return envelope.

The Coming National 2020 Elections particularly pique our energy and determination. It seems that everything we stand for – and will not stand for – is at stake in these elections. Of course we know that “government can’t solve everything,” but we need new officials at all levels, to do better things, right?

On July 4th, we celebrated Justice Patriotism and Love for America’s Potential. We hung flags from the tree in front of the Peace House (U.S. and LGBT) standing for all our national hopes. Of course we are conscious of America’s historic sins, faults, shortcomings, racism, empire-building and wars-for-unseemly purposes. But it’s up to every generation to nudge America closer to living up to our best ideals. Building energy now for the 2020 Elections is something we can all do for America and the world.

Justice For Julius Campaign: Stay tuned for calls for action seeking Commutation of Sentence for Julius Jones. Anyone can watch the 2918 ABC documentary “The Last Defense” detailing Julius’s wrongful conviction (see it on the website . We remain firm in our commitment to save Julius’s life and to abolish the death penalty forever.

Remember to put something in the little envelope to keep the Peace House going. Thanks.
